Four Years After Full Market Access, U.S. Fresh Potato Exports to Mexico Increase 123%

September 9, 2026

Mexico has become the largest export market for U.S. potatoes since full market access for U.S. fresh potatoes was implemented in May 2022. Since then, U.S. fresh potato exports have increased 123% in volume and 84% in value, creating significant opportunities for U.S. potato growers and exporters.

Export volume grew from 123,000 metric tons (MT) valued at $68.2 million in marketing year 2021/22 to 274,000 MT worth $125.3 million in 2025/26.

Prior to May 2022, U.S. fresh potatoes could only be shipped within a 26-kilometer border zone due to phytosanitary restrictions. Following more than 20 years of bilateral government efforts and support from USDA’s Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops (TASC) Program, a new work plan was implemented that granted access to Mexico’s entire market.

Expanded market access created new opportunities throughout the country. With support from USDA’s Market Access Program (MAP), Potatoes USA worked to build demand through retail promotions, foodservice outreach, buyer education, and engagement with chip manufacturers. These efforts increased awareness of U.S. potatoes and expanded opportunities across multiple market channels.

As access expanded beyond the border region, U.S. exporters were able to reach customers throughout Mexico. Potatoes USA’s market development activities helped the industry capitalize on these opportunities, contributing to substantial growth in exports and export value.

Today, Mexico is the leading export destination for U.S. potatoes and a strong example of how market access and market development can work together to benefit growers and exporters. Four years after full market access was implemented, the market continues to deliver meaningful returns for the U.S. potato industry.
