U.S. calendar year potato trade for 2019 showed a strong positive balance with exports exceeding imports by $342 million. Exports grew 9% in volume to 1,807,084 metric tons (MT) and 8% in value to $1.9 billion, while imports declined 9% in volume to 1,638,749 MT but increased 1% in value to $1.57 billion.
Export growth was led by increases of 7% in frozen, 12% in dehy, 13% in fresh and 38% in seed exports. The only decline was a 3% drop in potato chip exports. The decline in imports was caused by drops of 16% in fresh, 4.5% in dehy, 9.7% in seed potatoes, 2.7% in frozen, and 2% starch. Potato chip imports increased by 11.5%.
