The Potatoes 2.0 project, funded by a Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) grant and backed by the industry, is dedicated to developing a potato breeding system responsive to grower and market needs by moving the genetic processes from tetraploids (four chromosomes) to diploids (two chromosomes). While still under development in the U.S., countries like China and Europe are the leaders in diploid potato experiments.
Although excitement surrounds the potential, skepticism about success in the U.S. market still exists. Proactively combating suspicion, the team will hold various field days this summer where diploids will be displayed for field day participants, allowing growers to see them and ask questions.
