Potatoes USA Has Consumers Hopping on the Latest Trend – Painting Easter Potatoes

Earlier this year, as food prices continued to soar, we noticed consumers online suggesting painting Easter potatoes as a creative and affordable alternative to typical Easter traditions. Based on the information provided by early testers, it became evident how fun Easter potatoes can be – and it turns out, much of America felt the same.

Potatoes USA launched a  campaign encouraging people to paint Easter potatoes at home, focusing on the vegetables’ nutritional benefits, affordability, and long shelf life.

Through traditional media engagement and a social media campaign, word quickly spread regarding the new spud-tacular trend. The press release was picked up by 119 media outlets, which helped further spread the word, along with the resources featured on PotatoGoodness.com. A local Oregon potato promotion group even jumped in to organize a wonderful Easter potato painting event for kids at Fazio Farms that was covered by local media.

But the story wasn’t contained to local news outlets. Through proactive media engagement and organic growth, 897 stories about Easter potatoes were featured in news outlets across America. Some of the most high-profile coverage includes The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, which is seen by 1.5 million TV viewers nightly and has already reached more than 241,000 views on YouTube. It was also covered by Axios, which has 10 million unique monthly visitors, as well as being featured in the well-respected and influential Axios AM newsletter.

The effort was even mentioned at Produce for Better Health’s Annual Consumer Connection Conference. In her opening remarks, Cathy Burns, CEO of the International Fresh Produce Association, said that they should be painting potatoes at the White House for Easter next year.

In addition to the significant media coverage of the campaign, PRWeek had a poll asking people to vote for the best campaign for Easter 2023. Potatoes USA won with 57.9% of the vote – beating out Easter royalty, Cadbury.

It just goes to show potatoes are every-bunnies’ favorite vegetable.
