Colorado Woman Wins the Western States 100 and Ate Mashed Potatoes Along the Way
The Western States 100 is one of the most prestigious endurance events in the world and Courtney Dauwalter was the first woman in the second fastest time despite scorching temperatures of 106 °F to win.
“I just keep trying to push my limits with pace, how fast I can go, and how far I can go, and how deep I can dig mentally and physically to push through some of those obstacles and that pain you feel during those runs,” she said.
‘Keep it simple’
When asked how she refuels during her run, Courtney replied, “I have really simple stuff I use every race: Tailwind Nutrition, which is an electrolyte powder, Honey Stinger waffles and chews, then mashed potatoes. I keep it really simple. Over the years I found this combination of nutrition doesn’t turn my stomach. It gives me the energy and carbs that I need, and the salts, and can get me to most finish lines just fine.”
