Updated 2020 retail consumer profile now available
April 21, 2021
In March of 2020, consumers bought more potatoes and continued to do so throughout the year. In the recently updated basket study from IRI, about 84% of households purchased potatoes, which is 2% higher than in 2019. Not only did more people purchase potatoes, but 72% of households also bought potatoes more than once. Baskets with fresh potatoes in them increased in size as well. While this is consistent with all baskets at retail in 2020, it is worth noting retail consumers are spending $91.79 when fresh potatoes are in their basket and only half of that when they are not.
In 2019, retail consumers purchased potatoes six times per year on average, but in 2020, they purchased potatoes seven times per year, showing that they added fresh potatoes to their shopping trip more often. With the decline in trips to the store overall, this increase is good news for potatoes at retail.
The updated In-Store Consumer Profile includes the 2020 information from both the Basket Study and the Total Store Potato Study. Reach out to retail@potatoesusa.com with any questions.
